There are two types of keywords that many SEO companies refer to as the following: short tail keywords and long tail keywords.

Short Tail Keywords

Short tail keywords are a set of words that are non-specific or general. Researchers and web surfers mostly use these types of keywords. Ranking for short tail keywords can be a tedious task, due to the numerous website owners that make use of them on their website. Short tail keywords can generate high amounts of traffic, more quantity than quality. Using short tail keywords is not all negative, however it does depend on the goals of the website. Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keywords are a long set of words that cater to consumers that more or less know what they're searching for. On the other hand, a consumer that is merely "window shopping" or gathering information may choose to type in: popular wooden chair. Statistics indicate that long tail keywords generate less traffic but higher conversion rates for websites.

For SEO, it is a lot easier to rank for a set of long tail keywords because it's not as popular compare to head keywords. This means that a SEO campaign focused on long tail keywords is not entirely about generating heaps of content for ranking; but instead focuses on research of query trends and behaviour.


Several case studies published by SEO companies have shown that short tail keywords can generate 11 times more traffic compare to long tail keywords. However, conversion rates for long tail keywords were 5% higher. The use of short tail keywords should not be completely neglected, but for those that do not incorporate long tail keywords in their SEO campaign as missing out on the possibility of increasing revenue and quality visitors.
