  1. Anchor text- a set of text that a user sees in the place of a link on a website
  2. Article- a piece of writing to be primarily used for publication purposes
  3. Authority- the potential or ability of a website to rank high in search engines
  4. Black hat SEO- negative Search Engine Optimization methods that step over search engine guidelines
  5. Blog- an online journal or bulletin board for personal or business use
  6. Canonicalization- a webpage that can be opened using several URLs
  7. Comments- feedback generated by visitors about a specific content on a website
  8. Content- text, images and videos that support the website’s subject matter or theme
  9. Conversion rate- the rate at which a visitor is converted to a customer, used mostly for websites that deal with ecommerce
  10. CSS- Cascading Style Sheets, a method used for editing web documents
  11. DMOZ- The Open Directory Project, largest directory of websites that is manually overseen by humans
  12. Domain- a group of webpages that are linked together, a format used for location organization of websites
  13. Forums- a website that supports open discussions about a specific topic
  14. Google- world’s most widely used search engine started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1996
  15. Headings- a short description which can be used as a short introduction
  16. Inbound link- an outside link from a website that points to the main website
  17. Index- large amounts of website information related data used to answer user’s queries and build the directory of a search engine
  18. IP Address- Internet Protocol Address, a set of numbers that is used to identify computers on the internet
  19. Keywords- a set of words used to target a specific niche in the online market
  20. Keyword Density- the ratio of the number of times a set of keywords are used within the content of a webpage
  21. Link- a recommendation or citation from one web document to another
  22. Link farms- websites that provide and hoard links with the intention of link building
  23. Link wheel- a white hat SEO method wherein a group of websites are strategically linked together with the intention to boost the main website’s search engine rankings
  24. Long tail keywords- a set of precise words used to target specific queries made by users when using a search engine
  25. Off page SEO- SEO methods that are not directly related to the main website (social media websites, link wheel, PPC)
  26. On page SEO- SEO methods that directly deal with the main website (site structure, on site blog, keywords)
  27. Outbound link- a link from a website directing to an external website that is not within the same domain
  28. PageRank (PR)- a large part of a search engine’s algorithm used to gauge and organize the importance of a webpage or web documents
  29. PPC- Pay Per Click, a search engine ad campaign used to boost or direct traffic towards a website. Charges are only imposed when a user clicks on the ad
  30. Redirect- a notification technique used to alert users, search engines and browsers that a web page has been moved to a different location
  31. Robots.txt- a file that advises the search engine which files not to crawl
  32. RSS- Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, a method used to compile and distribute online content
  33. Search engine- an online tool used to find and classify information
  34. Search engine submission- the act of submitting a webpage or website to a search engine directory
  35. SEO- Search Engine Optimization, a series of methods used in online marketing that deals with how search engines process, classify and rank websites based on relevancy
  36. SERPs- Search Engine Results Page, a list of websites gathered by the search engine after a query has been made
  37. Short tail keywords- a set of general keywords used to target queries made by users when using a search engine
  38. Site Map- a page that a crawler can use to navigate through a website
  39. Social media- websites that support or provide platforms for users to generate personal content and communicate
  40. Spam- unsolicited email also known as “junk mail”
  41. Web 2.0- websites that promote social interaction using user generated content
  42. White hat SEO- positive SEO methods that work within the guidelines of a search engine to successfully market and promote a website
  43. URL- Uniform Resource Locator, the address of a webpage or web document
  44. XML- Extensible Markup Language, a format composed of text used to organize information
